Lagos, Nigeria — Pan-Atlantic University (PAU) continues its commitment to character development and meaningful education with the launch of its latest digital literacy program titled “Beyond the Spin: Understanding Slot Games and Digital Habits.” This initiative aims to educate the public—especially students and youth—on the hidden dangers of non-monetary digital slot games, which are increasingly popular among young internet users.

Although these games do not involve real money, free or “non-betting” slot games still pose significant psychological and behavioral risks. Such games often serve as a gateway to real gambling.
PAU, through a collaboration between its School of Media and Communication https://mazavivah.com/ and the Centre for Ethics and Sustainable Development, has developed a training curriculum that addresses:
How slot game algorithms work
The addictive effects of random reward mechanisms
The disguise of slot mechanics in children’s gaming apps
Strategies for building healthy digital habits
The program targets secondary schools and local communities around Ibeju-Lekki. PAU facilitators are conducting interactive workshops, public seminars, and Q&A sessions with students, teachers, and parents.
“We aim not only to protect people from money-based gambling, but also from the development of a gambling mindset that can form through non-monetary slot games,” said Dr. Ifeoma Nwafor, one of the program’s initiators.
PAU is encouraging collaboration with local governments, educational institutions, and edtech startups to expand the program’s reach. Future plans include the development of online modules and educational social media campaigns targeting young users on TikTok and Instagram.
With this initiative, PAU aspires to be a pioneer in strengthening digital awareness and ethics in Africa, ensuring that people can recognize disguised forms of gambling that may foster addiction from an early age.
